‘Fortnight’ by Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone: lyrics and meaning of the song (2024)

The wait is over as “The Tortured Poets Department” is finally here. In February, during the 2024 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift announced the release of this new album. Although the singer’s fans were anticipating an announcement regarding “Reputation (Taylor’s Version),” Taylor decided to release a new studio album, her eleventh, titled “The Tortured Poets Department,” as she shared after receiving her Grammy:

“This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number, I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that. So I want to thank the fans by telling them a secret I’ve been hiding from them for the past two years, and that is that my new album is coming out on April 19th,” the star said while receiving her award for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights.”

Through her social media channels, the singer revealed that “Fortnight,” a collaboration with rapper Post Malone, would be the first single from ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’

“I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever. I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight.,” she shared on X.

At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings.

The lyrics of ‘Fortnight’ by Taylor Swift

The lyrics of Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” were leaked the night before the official release of “The Tortured Poets Department.” After tonight’s premiere, it was confirmed that the leak was mostly accurate.

Regarding the meaning of the title, “fortnight” refers to a unit of time equivalent to 14 days or two weeks. The word derives from the Old English term “fēowertīene niht,” which means “fourteen nights.” Curiously, Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy, who many believe are muses on this album, are both English. Here are the complete lyrics:

[Verse 1: Taylor Swift]

I was s’posed to be sent away

But they forgot to come and get me

I was a functioning alcoholic

'Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic

All of this to say, I hope you're okay

But you're the reason

And no one here's to blame

But what about your quiet treason?

[Chorus: Taylor Swift]

And for a fortnight there we were forever running

'Til you sometimes ask about the weather

Now you're in my backyard turned into good neighbors

Your wife waters flowers, I want to kill her

[Verse 2: Taylor Swift and Post Malone]

All my mornings are Monday stuck in an endless February

I took the miracle move on drug, the effects were temporary

And I love you, it's ruining my life

I love you, it's ruining my life

I touched you for only a fortnight

I touched you, but I touched you

[Chorus: Taylor Swift]

And for a fortnight there we were forever runnin'

'Til you sometimes ask about the weather

Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors

Your wife waters flowers, I want to kill her

And for a fortnight there we were together running

'Til you sometimes come and tug my sweater

Now you're at the mailbox turned into good neighbors

My husband is cheating, I want to kill him

[Bridge: Taylor Swift and Post Malone]

I love you, it's ruining my life

I love you, it's ruining my life

I touched you for only a fortnight

I touched you, I touched you

I love you, it's ruining my life

I love you, it's ruining my life

I touched you for only a fortnight

I touched you, I touched you

[Verse 3: Post Malone and Taylor Swift]

I call you up but you won't pick up

Another fortnight lost in America

Move to Florida, buy the car you want (Car you want)

But it won't start up 'til you touch, touch, touch me

I call you up but you won't pick up

Another fortnight lost in America

Move to Florida, buy the car you want

But it won't start up 'til I touch, touch, touch you
